Dedicated Teen Artist Honored by Arts Council Menifee

By Arts Council Menifee

At 19, artist Christian Keefer is still on the verge of a long journey through the art world. He looks forward to taking his talent in many different directions and was honored to receive the title of Artist of the Month for July by Arts Council Menifee.

Keefer has already shown and sold many of his works, including a large colorful painting that is now hanging at Whimsical Frozen Yogurt and Gelato at Menifee’s Countryside Marketplace. The sale was made during a show of works by many local artists at the Arts Showcase event, held there on May 16.

The owner of the popular yogurt shop purchased Keefer’s mixed media work, named "Pure Joy", that depicts two young women enjoying an ice cream cone.

"It just all fell into place," said Keefer, of Menifee. "The project’s coloring matched the yogurt shop to a T. I was just shocked and overwhelmed when he approached me about buying it."

Keefer started seriously pursuing art in middle school and took art classes at Elsinore High School, where he began to explore more aspects of the craft.

"My grandmother is an extremely talented artist and my dad is a commercial artist," he said. "I got into street art (when I was younger) and it evolved from there. I discovered I really enjoyed it and wanted to keep growing as an artist."

While still in high school, he painted T-shirts and sold them to friends. Keefer’s ultimate goal is to create his own clothing line, using tools that haven’t been used before to create something unique.

He appreciates the genre of pop art but is all about finding a new niche to make a name for himself as an artist. Keefer likes to think outside the box and continually searches for new ways to make a statement.

"I’ll always do something with art," he said. "I get a lot of (positive) feedback and that feels really good, but at the end of the day my art has to speak for itself. If I can just make enough money to get by, that’s OK – as long as I’m doing what I love."

Keefer’s dedication to his craft has him spending seven hours a day this summer learning more about composition and design techniques through two art classes at Mt. San Jacinto College’s Menifee Valley campus.

"We enjoy the friendly relationship with MSJC’s fine arts department and support it by participating in the college’s art shows and events," said Linda Morrison, who co-chairs Arts Council Menifee’s Visual Arts Division with Kathy Pickett and Mimi Maki.

When Keefer isn’t at school or working in his garage studio, he helps his dad at his business. Brian Keefer has operated Freedom Signs for more than 30 years and his son said his success is due to the craftsmanship he puts into his work. Brian is responsible for many of the signs on Front Street in Old Town Temecula.

Young artists are encouraged to attend the monthly Visual Arts Division meetings, which include demonstrations. The annual patron fee of $20 is waived for student artists.

"I really appreciate the Arts Council Menifee program," Keefer said. "I can take what I need to grow and learn in an art sense; it’s a great environment to be in as an artist."

Arts Council Menifee offers local artists opportunities to exhibit their art – at its gallery and at special events where they can display and sell their art.

"Students are discovering the benefits of joining the Arts Council as a place to learn and share their art and be a part of Menifee’s art community," Morrison said. "We know there are talented young artists in our city and we are thrilled when they join our organization."

What's Up, Doc? The Rewards of Being a Teacher

By Randall Freeman, PhD

Twenty seven years (and counting), 30 classrooms, two school districts, seven schools, 14 principals, only God knows how many students. I love being a teacher!

I have spent the last 26 years of my teaching career in a neighboring school district. I was hired by the district, so as a district employee, I am subject (no pun intended) to teach at whichever district school I am needed. With a multiple-subject credential, I am qualified to teach any self-contained classroom, transitional kindergarten through 12th grade. Fortunately for me, secondary grades are usually not self-contained, so I stick to elementary school.

I thoroughly enjoy teaching the little ones but could be called upon to teach the older ones. I have done so in the past and could again in the future. That's the teaching profession.

I am responsible for setting up my classroom, maintaining it per standards, and cleaning it at the end of the year. The nice thing is that I enjoy coordinating my classroom environment to suit my style, not the style of my wife or family. It's all me. My classroom reflects my personality, such as it is.

I am responsible for the safety, socialization growth, academic progress, and just about everything else for my students, whether it be for one day or an entire school year. We bond, we become a family. It is a tremendous responsibility and a great joy.

I am the Great Communicator. I visit with families on a daily basis, I share the whines and the challenges. We plan for the present and the future. I meet with teachers, administrators, and staff to share concerns and ideas for interventions. I meet with students to encourage, teach, learn, mediate, and much more each day.

I wipe noses and I soften pain, whether physical or emotional. I arbitrate problems, assist children in mediating conflict. I listen to students share joy and sorrow. I lend a listening ear. I don't judge.

I celebrate successes and share in challenges. I encourage responsibility, caring, trustworthiness, and the other character traits of a successful individual. I assess progress and plan improvement for the children and for my teaching.

I am counselor, custodian, mother, father, uncle/aunt. I am nurse, cop, safety patrol officer. There is much more.

I teach. It is the greatest profession in the world.

Randy Freeman and his family have lived in Menifee since 1993. Randy teaches kindergarten in Perris and his lovely wife Karen teaches first grade here in Menifee at Freedom Crest Elementary School. They are the proud parents of four beautiful daughters: Daniela, 18, and 14-year-old triplets Sarah, Holly, and Megan. Other family members include dogs Scruffy, Mikko, & Max, 17-year-old cat Hunter, and turtle Tuttles. Randy earned his PhD in early childhood education in 2011 and has served on the Menifee Union School Board since 2008. Randy has wisely decided to delete the bit about being Karen's boss in order to continue living in his happy home.

Temecula police released images from a surveillance camera showing the suspect and suspect vehicle in a recent mail theft.

Another incident of mail theft in Southwest Riverside County has Sheriff's deputies searching for the suspects and issuing suggestions to residents about ways to help protect their mail from thieves.

The latest incident took place June 23 at about 5:20 p.m., according to a Sheriff's Department news release. A Hispanic female was captured on a home security camera system stealing a package from the front porch of a home in the 41900 block of Camino Casana in Temecula. According to police, the suspect was the passenger in a white Dodge Ram full-size crew cab truck with two stickers on the rear window. The suspects fled the area before police arrived and are still at large.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to call the Temecula Police Department's detective bureau at 951-696-3000. Several incidents of mail theft have also been reported in Menifee in the last few months. Anyone with information on mail theft in the area should call the Menifee Police Department at 951-210-1000.

Tips for residents on how to help protect their mail:

-- Avoid leaving outgoing mail in your mailbox for pick-up. Use the letter slots inside your post office for your mail, or hand it to a letter carrier.

-- Pick up your mail promptly after delivery. Don't leave it in your mailbox overnight. If you're expecting checks, credit cards, or other negotiable items, ask a trusted friend or neighbor to pick up your mail.

-- If you don't receive a check or other valuable mail you're expecting, contact the issuing agency immediately.

-- If you change your address, immediately notify your post office and anyone with whom you do business via the mail.

-- Don't send cash in the mail.

-- Tell your post office when you'll be out of town, so they can hold your mail until you return.

-- Report all suspected mail theft to a postal inspector.

-- Consider starting a neighborhood watch program. By exchanging work and vacation schedules with trusted friends and neighbors, you can watch each other's mailboxes (as well as homes).

-- Consult with your local postmaster for the most up-to-date regulations on mailboxes, including the availability of locked centralized or curbside mailboxes.

Police today announced the arrest of a San Diego County man who was discovered outside the Nuevo home of a 12-year-old girl he met on social media.

Scott Stilwell, 27, was booked into the Southwest Detention Center for contacting a minor with intent to commit a sexual offense and sending harmful matter to a minor, according to Sheriff's Department authorities. The girl's father detained Stilwell after a physical altercation until deputies arrived to make the arrest.

After finding an open window in his daughter's vacant bedroom about 1:30 a.m. Monday, the father went outside and found his daughter near a vehicle driven by the suspect. Police, who had been alerted of a possible missing person at the residence moments earlier, arrived to make the arrest in the 22000 block of Via Santana.

According to police, the girl had been communicating with Stilwell via social media for some time. In a news release, the Sheriffs Department reminds parents and caretakers to be aware of their children's online and cell phone activity to ensure their safety.
