The game of the year in Menifee high school football has finally arrived. Yes, it's on a Thursday, but you know the place will be packed tonight at 7 when the Heritage High School football team plays host to crosstown rival Paloma Valley.
Fans are advised to get there early to get a good seat for what promises to be a good matchup, as always.
Heritage (3-0, 8-0), the defending CIF champion, has won 18 consecutive games dating back to early last season. That's the longest active winning streak in the state. The Patriots have won all four previous Menifee Bowl matchups with Paloma Valley. Moreover, Heritage is 23-0 in Sunbelt League games over the last five seasons.
Coach Kraig Broach's team is led by quarterback Brett Virgil, who has passed for 739 yards and 9 touchdowns. The running attack is led by Isaiah Morrow, who surpassed the 1,000-yard mark in rushing in last week's 14-6 victory over Temescal Canyon.
Paloma Valley (2-1, 5-3) is coming off a 53-21 victory over Perris. The Wildcats are led by quarterback Raine Pohaku Kaheaku-Paiva, who has passed for 1,200 yards and 12 touchdowns. Kaheaku-Paiva and running back Demarco Prewitt have each rushed for 458 yards.
The Wildcats' only league loss last year was to Heritage. They finished the season 10-2, advancing to the second round of the CIF playoffs.
Stop by the Menifee 24/7 tent on the home side of the field tonight. We'll be giving away prizes.
