The campaign season has begun in Menifee, with candidates for mayor and city council seats preparing for public appearances and candidate forums to discuss local issues.
Scott Mann, one of three candidates for mayor, was among the first to appear publicly as a certified candidate. Mann actually played a dual role last Thursday, attending a gathering of area Republicans as chairman of the City of Menifee Mitt Romney 2012 campaign.
Mann, a former Menifee city council member, and more than 75 others gathered at Maxx's Pizza in Murrieta to watch Romney give his presidential nomination acceptance speech in Tampa at the Republican National Convention.

The event was sponsored by Phil Paule, the Republican-endorsed candidate in the new 67th Assembly District.
Also in attendance were Riverside Republican Party Chairman Randon Lane, Wildomar Mayor Ben Benoit, and California Republican Party Vice Chairman Steve Baric.
Current city council member Darcy Kuenzi, another candidate for mayor, attended a "meet and greet" mixer held in her honor last week. She and Mann previously attended a candidate forum sponsored by the Menifee/Perris Valley Democratic Club, along with city council candidates Sue Kristjansson and Bill Zimmerman.
John F. Smith, the third candidate for mayor, will join the four remaining candidates for city council positions at another candidate forum sponsored by the Democratic Club. That event will be held Thursday, Sept. 13 at 6:30 p.m. at Provident Bank. Candidates invited are Smith, District 3 council candidate Wallace Edgerton and District 1 candidates Greg August, Nick Martin and Carol Sullivan.
The previous day, on Wednesday, Sept. 12, the Menifee Valley Chamber of Commerce will host a candidate forum at its quarterly luncheon. That event will begin at noon at Menifee Valley Country Club. All candidates have been invited to attend.
