Local adults and children will get a taste of some old-fashioned fun Saturday when Valley-Wide Recreation and the City of Menifee host a Soap Box Derby.
Competing in pairs on the downhill slope of Menifee Road between Craig Ave. and Holland Road, drivers will roll their hand-made cars over the course in three different age groups.
The action begins at 8 a.m., when Menifee Road will be closed to through traffic and spectators are invited to line the street to watch. Six cars are entered in the Big Wheels division, for drivers ages 13-7. That will be followed by 11 entries in the Training Wheels division (ages 8-12). The final division is Limo Wheels, featuring adult drivers representing businesses and organizations.
All cars were built from scratch and have no motor devices. They move strictly by the force of gravity pushing them downhill. Participants were given help and training during construction at clinics sponsored by Valley-Wide Recreation.
Detours are planned for surrounding traffic between the hours of 6 a.m. and 2 p.m.
