A reader emailed us recently, asking if we knew what the "house on stilts" was at the corner of Newport Road and Goetz Road, outside one of the entrances to Audie Murphy Ranch. Since then, we have driven past several times and wondered the same thing.
First, this little "shack" is not on stilts. It's built on a foundation of rock walls, creating a tunnel of sorts at the sidewalk. There are plaques on each cornerstone with a cowboy logo representing the Audie Murphy theme and a light inside the tunnel, but not much else.
According to a spokesperson for the developer, the structure is Audie Murphy Ranch's Primary Monument, which is a ranch-style pedestrian portal as you enter the community from the west end. It includes an eight-foot-wide pedestrian/bike trail that leads through the monument to the corner of Goetz and Newport Roads.
Apparently, it's a simple as that.
