Good news for Menifee residents still out there stringing their Christmas lights: The deadline for the Menifee Holiday House Decorating Contest has been extended, and local businesses are donating some great prizes!

We've received some wonderful entries already, but many have asked for more time to complete their decorations. So instead of cutting off entries today, residents will have until Dec. 15 to enter. Then winners will be presented their prizes and certificate of appreciation at the Dec. 17 Menifee City Council meeting!

In addition to a certificate presented them at the city council meeting, winners will receive a $50 gift card from one of our local businesses, plus a City of Menifee Pride Package including a tote bag, hat, USB car charger, gift cards for great treats like pizza and frozen yogurt, and more. A photo of winners' decorated houses will also be posted on Menifee 24/7 along with the address at which residents can drive by and enjoy the festive light displays.

Menifee 24/7 is partnering with the City of Menifee in sponsoring this contest. All you have to do is take a photo of the outside of your house with all the decorations, then email the photo with a description of your decorations and your address to menifee247info@gmail.com by Dec 15.

Winners will be announced on Menifee 24/7 and at the Dec. 17 city council meeting in six categories:

Best in show: The house with the best overall presentation for the holiday season.

Most spiritual: A decorated house that best illustrates the spiritual aspect of the season.

Most humorous: Make us laugh and you might win this category!

Best use of lights: The house that shines above all others with its lighting effects.

Most festive: Capture the imagination and cheer of the holiday season and you're a potential winner here.

Community/block theme: Get together with your neighbors and decorate your block or community with a holiday theme. You could be the winner!

Remember, you must submit your contest entry in the form of an email to menifee247info@gmail.com with your name, a .jpg photo, description of your decorations and your complete address. Your house will be judged in what our judges determine is the most appropriate category or categories.

Good luck and have fun decorating!

Resident who submit photos and their address in this contest give their permission for Menifee 24/7 and the City of Menifee to publicize that information in the event your entry is a winner. Names will not be included unless requested by the homeowner.

Reorganized City Council Begins Business of Moving On

Menifee Mayor Scott Mann presents a portrait to outgoing council member Tom Fuhrman.

With virtually no reference to the mudslinging and accusations of the recent city elections, the fourth generation of the Menifee City Council was organized Wednesday night with the five men now seated at the dais indicating they are ready to move on and work together for the good of the city.

It has been a tumultuous three-plus months since campaigning began in earnest for the mayor's position and two other council seats. The controversies included allegations of campaign sign tampering and the anonymous distribution of inflammatory fliers. Council member Tom Fuhrman was arrested on a felony corruption charge. Mayor Scott Mann was accused of taking part in a smear campaign two years ago. Newly elected council member Matt Liesemeyer had to answer to the revelation of a felony arson conviction 19 years ago.

For an election season that had a little bit of everything, Wednesday night's city council meeting was remarkably tame. Mann, who has been openly critical of Fuhrman in the past, shook Furhman's hand and thanked him for his service as Fuhrman surrendered his council seat to Liesemeyer (at left, being sworn in by city clerk Kathy Bennett).

Fuhrman described his term as District 2 council representative as "a wonderful four year-experience."

Mann, Liesemeyer and re-elected District 4 representative John Denver were all given loud ovations as they took the oath of office. Fuhrman was given a standing ovation upon his exit.

And Menifee moves on.

"I know that you have thought for a long, long time that I harbor some grudge against you," Mann said to Fuhrman at the start of the reorganization procedure. "That simply is not the case and it is far from the truth ... we wish you well."

Fuhrman, who ran for re-election on the platform of being a champion for rights of rural property owners and small business owners, was involved in a series of battles with the city over alleged zoning violations on his Menifee ranch during his term on the council. He also faces a Dec. 18 court date to answer charges from the District Attorney's office for alleged conflict of interest regarding a government code.

Yet despite the controversy surrounding him, few have doubted Fuhrman's real desire to stand up for the long-time Menifee resident and rural land owner. During his brief address to the crowd upon leaving the dais, Fuhrman urged residents to "make sure you watch over the campaign promises and see that they're kept."

In preparing to replace Fuhrman in District 2, Liesemeyer first had to deny allegations that his primary concern is commercial development. Then he had to explain a 1995 conviction for a fire set when he was 18 -- a case, which he says was dismissed 10 years ago, that did not preclude him from being eligible for holding office.

But like Mann -- who never confirmed or denied his role in a smear campaign against an opponent in the last election -- Liesemeyer focused only on the road ahead Tuesday night.

"I'd like to thank everyone who stood on street corners with me, who knocked on all those doors," said Liesemeyer, previously chair of the Planning Commission. "I know I still have a lot to learn, and I hope to spend some time with the staff that will clarify my perception and understanding of how the city works."

In accepting another term as mayor, Mann said "Menifee has many challenges and opportunities ... these are not all easy tasks, but I know we can accomplish great things when we work together."

Denver (above right) was unanimously selected as mayor pro tem. He thanked his wife and campaign manager, Linda for her tireless service and support.

Council member Wallace Edgerton, known for his rambling speeches during council meetings, was remarkably quiet this time. He did, however, voice his support for those elected to the three council seats.

"Previously, the council has been a bit split," he said. "The people have spoken, and I genuinely look forward to working with the mayor and the council."

Scott Mann, his hand on a Bible provided by pastor Chris Suitt, takes the oath of office as mayor.

The Menifee Police Department's Traffic Unit will be conducting a DUI/Driver's License Checkpoint at an undisclosed location.

The checkpoint will take place Dec. 12, between 7 p.m. to 2 a.m., somewhere with the city limits.

According to the press release, officers will be looking for signs of alcohol and drug impairment. They will also be checking drivers for proper licensing.

Research shows that crashes involving an impaired driver, can be reduced by up to 20 percent when well-publicized DUI checkpoints and proactive DUI patrols are conducted routinely.

Recent statistics reveal that 30 percent of drivers in fatal crashes had one or more drugs in their systems. A study of active drivers, showed more tested positive for drugs that may impair driving, at 14 percent, than did for alcohol, at 7.3 percent.

Drivers caught driving impaired can expect a DUI arrest to include jail time, fines, fees, DUI classes, and other expenses that can exceed $10,000.

Elite Clinical Trials Seeks Volunteers for Asthma Study

Advertorial Supplement:

If Asthma affects you in your daily life, Elite Clinical Trials needs your help in studying the effectiveness of different doses of Dulera to treat the symptoms.

Volunteers should be at least 12 years old and have had suffered from persistent asthma for more than one year.

Dulera is already commonly used to treat the symptoms of asthma, but Elite Clinical Trials wants to take that treatment one step further in determining how effective different compounds found in Dulera really are.

Both Mometasone Furoate and Formoterol are found in the FDA approved drug Dulera.

Mometasone Furoate is an inhaled steroid hormone similar to those produced through the adrenal glands to reduce inflammation.

Formoterol is a long-acting beta agonist (LABA) bronchodilator that prevents asthma attacks from occurring.

The study will test the effectiveness and safety of both Mometasone Furoate and Formoterol inhaled in fixed doses versus Mometasone Furoate by itself as a multi-dose inhaler monotherapy.

The study will last for a period of 26 weeks and has no chance of placebo.

As with any other Elite Clinical Trials study, qualified volunteers are compensated for both their time and travel as it relates to the study.

Volunteers participating in Elite Clinical Trials studies do not need health insurance to receive medical attention as it relates to the study and the study drugs are free of charge.

Participating in an Elite Clinical Trial is a favor not only to those who are suffering from the condition being studied, but to the medical world as a whole.

One study can affect how doctors prescribe medication and how much the symptoms of conditions effect people everywhere.

To find a clinical trial near you, contact Elite Clinical Trials at (951) 678-1551.

City employee Allen Yun and others were busy Thursday installing lights on the oak tree on Town Center Drive.

City employees and volunteers are busy setting up for Menifee's biggest ever Christmas celebration -- a tree lighting and holiday festival tonight on the new Town Center Drive.

Festive lights have been placed on a 30-foot oak tree recently planted at the roundabout that eventually will be the focal point of a 172-acre commercial and residential development near Newport Road and Haun Road. Tonight's event runs from 4:30-7:30 p.m. Shortly after dark, the tree will be lit up to signal the start of the holiday season.

Many other events are planned for tonight as well.

Bands from Paloma Valley High School and Heritage High School will perform. Other musical performers, including the Wonderellas Holiday Revue, St. Vincent Ferrer Catholic Church Choir, and performers from Arts Council Menifee will perform on a stage set up for the event. There will be a snow play area and elves' workshop for the kids, plus many food and craft vendors. And of course Santa will arrive and will pose for photos with the children.

In addition, the holiday movies "Polar Express" and "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" will be shown on a giant screen. Guests are urged to bring lawn chairs for seating to watch the movies.

The Western Riverside Council of Governments, through its Western Riverside Energy Leader Partnership, will be hosting a booth at the event where residents can trade old inefficient holiday lights for free energy efficient light bulbs. Customers are allowed to trade in up to two strands, consisting of 50 lights or more and in working order, while supplies last. Those interested in participating must bring a recent Southern California Edison bill and a picture ID for the person whose name is on the bill.

A lighted parking lot has been set up near the oak tree, to the left of Town Center Drive as guests arrive. Town Center Drive, which has been closed to traffic during construction, will be open at is intersection with Newport Road, just west of Haun Road. The road will remain open during December for residents to visit the Christmas tree and take photos.

Town Center Drive will eventually be the main street through the Menifee Town Center and will be an access road from Newport Road south to La Piedra Road and Santa Rosa Academy. Access to Town Center Drive south of the roundabout will not be available tonight or later this month, however. All visitors must enter and exit from Newport Road and Town Center Drive.

Announcement of the Holiday House Decorating Contest, which has been extended to Dec. 15, will now take place later this month.

Admission is free and the parking lot opens at 4 p.m. Be sure to dress warmly and arrive on time for this festive event, sponsored by the City of Menifee. Guests are urged to bring canned food for the Menifee Community Cupboard and unwrapped new toys for the Spark of Love toy drive.
