Wildcats Have High Hopes for 2016 Football Season

Optimism has never run higher during Bert Esposito's tenure as head football coach at Paloma Valley High School, with preseason practice now in the second week and just over two weeks until the season opener.
Esposito says the Wildcats must still prove themselves on the field, but based on raw talent and a nice mix of returning players, he is excited to see the team in its first game, which will take place Aug. 26 at Rancho Buena Vista High School in Vista.
"We've pretty much replaced every single position with a guy who is, if not equal, pretty close to it," Esposito said after practice on Tuesday. "But I've seen teams like that come out and lay an egg. You still have to play the game.
"Sometimes you can get too much press, start thinking about yourself too much. This is one of those practices where I had to put them back in their place and make them understand they haven't done anything yet."
Granted, Tuesday's practice ended with Esposito telling his players he hasn't yet seen the type of senior leadership he's looking for. Even so, he can't say enough about one of his starting juniors -- quarterback Chance Nolan (right).
As a sophomore in 2015, Nolan passed for 2,076 yards and 23 touchdowns for the Wildcats, who finished 7-4 after losing to Redlands in the first round of the playoffs. He displayed his talent again in June, leading his team to the championship of the Adidas California 7 on 7 passing tournament.
"He's way better," Esposito said about the 6-foot-1, 180-pound quarterback. "He's so much more mature and he's really grasping the offense. He's grown, he's faster ... It's the just confidence that he can make every throw, every read. He's got really good connection with the receivers."
Speaking of wide receivers, Esposito called that group "loaded", despite the graduation of Cameron Whatley, who caught 42 passes for 671 yards and 12 touchdowns last year. Players like junior Phillip Mills and Jacob Salas lead a group that has more depth than Esposito can recall having before.
"We're seven or eight deep and any one of them can score, run a route and do some damage," Esposito said. "You can only cover so much, and at some point you're going to show us what your coverage is. If our line up front can give Chance the time he had in passing league, it's really gonna be fun."
The Wildcats' top two running backs last year, Demarco Prewitt and Khayrii Joyner, have graduated. Senior Corey Maddox returns with considerable experience, however, while Andre Kirkpatrick, Caiser Leboss and Jacob Salas add depth. Steven Bradshaw, who is perhaps most well known as a linebacker, can also pound the ball inside in short-yardage situations.
Bradshaw leads a strong linebacker corps on defense and the defensive line has strong leadership in Chase Ryther, Maleek Baranauskas and Donald Johnson.
"Overall, this team has more talent and speed than any team I've ever had," Esposito said. "I've had some great players in the past, but as a whole, this team has it. The only thing we're lacking is the size. But we have a solid group of guys up front. Four of them were starters last year and they're a year older. They're a lot more aggressive than last year."
The Wildcats will hold an intrasquad scrimmage Friday night, beginning with the lower levels at 6 p.m. and concluding with the varsity scrimmage at 8 p.m.

New Group of Leaders Ready to Take Charge at Heritage

Some of the familiar faces are gone, but when you're Heritage High School football coach Kraig Broach, the turnover rate is simply an opportunity for a new group of young men to have the ultimate experience.
As the Patriots prepare for their Aug. 26 season opener against Great Oak, they have a new starting quarterback. Brett Virgil, who passed for more than 2,500 yards and 36 touchdowns the last two seasons, is now attending West Point Military Academy. But coaches are high on junior Devan Freedland, a transfer from Norco High School who has looked good in practice.
Gone also are running back Jalen Glover, who rushed for more than 1,500 yards and 18 touchdowns, and all-purpose back Aleva Hifo, who rushed for 488 yards and 9 TDs and caught 9 touchdown passes. But that just means it's an opportunity as the No. 1 running back for senior Javier Luna, who rushed for more than 600 yards and 8 touchdowns in 2015.
Broach isn't saying he doesn't miss the graduates from a 2015 team that went 13-1 and advanced to the CIF Southern Section championship game. He's just as excited about those who have assumed the new leadership roles on the 2016 squad, however.
"It's refreshing; it's like there's a whole new face to the program," Broach said after practice on Thursday. "These kids out there today, it's their turn. It's fun to see their energy.
"You're going to have a transition from year to year. The wins and losses will take care of themselves. It's about the leadership, and I couldn't ask for more in that regard. It really makes it fun for me as a coach."
Freedland, the starting JV quarterback at Norco last year, has stepped in quickly to lead the offense in preseason drills.
"He's a great kid and a smart kid who's played quarterback since youth league," Broach said. "I could tell right away about his confidence. He's well respected by his teammates."
In addition to Luna, junior Sherod White will see a lot of playing time at running back. He saw very limited action in 11 games last season as a sophomore but has continued to impress in preseason workouts. At wide receiver, Broach will look to juniors James Phillips and Rashoud Shelton and senior Tyree Morrow.
Luna will also play linebacker, helping to lead a defense that also includes seniors Jayden Dawson (safety) and Anfernee Aubert (defensive line). Senior Scott Walther will help anchor the offensive line.
The Patriots will be recognized in a legacy ceremony today at 6 p.m. They will be at home for their season opener Aug. 26 against Great Oak. Last year, the team had only four home games because of delays in completing the new artificial turf field.
"This time last year, we were practicing on a grass side field," Broach said. "This time the field is beautiful, the track is built, and we're ready to go."

Residents Report Thefts of Packages from Front Porches
A resident sent this photo to Menifee 24/7, saying it is a photo of the suspect from a home security camera. |
Residents in a Menifee neighborhood near La Ladera Park are asking for the public's help in identifying and reporting to police the suspects in what they say have been multiple thefts of packages from the doorsteps of homes there.
A resident of the 29600 block of Cool Meadow Drive said thieves struck the neighborhood Tuesday and Wednesday, with a white female getting out of a dark colored pickup truck to steal packages from in front of homes. The resident said the driver appears to be a white male about 55 or older. Home surveillance systems have captured images of the woman, but no one has captured an image of the license plate.
The incident has been reported to the Sheriff's Department. Atkins said among the items stolen from front porches are children's school supplies. If you have any information about this incident, call the Sheriff's Department at 951-210-1000.

Mann, Winter Will Be Only Mayoral Candidates on Ballot
The application period for seats on the Menifee City Council closed with no additional candidates qualified on Friday, meaning only four residents will be on the November ballot, and two will be running unopposed.
Only the mayor's race has two candidates -- incumbent Scott Mann and Neil Winter, who ran unsuccessfully for a District 3 council seat last fall. Mann, who became Menifee's first elected mayor in 2012, is seeking his third two-year term. Other council member terms are for four years and represent one of four districts in the city.
Mann served on the inaugural City Council in 2008, before the mayor's position became a separately elected council position. He lost a bid for re-election to Tom Fuhrman, then served on the Menifee Union School District Board before being elected as mayor two years later. Mann is director of risk management for the Moreno Valley Unified School District and serves as chairman of the Riverside County Republican Party.
Winter is a retired businessman who most recently worked part-time for the Menifee Valley Chamber of Commerce. He lost to Lesa Sobek last fall to fill the remaining year of the District 3 term of Wallace Edgerton, who died while in office. Winter is promoting himself as a strong candidate because he would serve as a "full-time mayor."
The other two City Council seats up for election Nov. 8 are in District 3 and District 1. No one applied to challenge the incumbents in those districts, so Sobek in District 3 and Greg August in District 1 will run unopposed.
District 2 council member Matt Liesemeyer and District 4 council member John Denver each have two years remaining in their terms.

MUSD Website Updates Info on Bus Transportation
Menifee Union School District officials are referring parents of local students to the district's website for updated information on eligibility for bus transportation and location of bus stops.
Some readers contacted Menifee 24/7 today with complaints about the service and scheduling provided by the district, which this year has contracted with Hemet Unified School District to provide bus service to Menifee. A spokesperson for MUSD today urged parents to refer to the district website for the latest information and to confirm bus stop locations and eligibility during the transition.
According to the MUSD website, bus transportation is free and no registration is required, but students must live more than 1.25 miles (grades K-5) or 2 miles (grades 6-8) from their school to be eligible to ride the bus.
When visiting the MUSD website here, click on the link to bus schedules on the left side of the home page. Then click on the blue WebQuery link and input the student's school and address to determine whether the student is eligible for bus transportation and what the bus schedule is.
For more information, contact the district's Transportation Department at 951-679-6833.

What's Up, Doc? Thanks to Dr. Greenberg
By Randall Freeman, PhD
It’s always difficult to say goodbye to someone you have known and respected for several years. The good thing about this certain goodbye is that the person in question is retiring, not dying.
I am writing about someone whom I consider to be a good friend and colleague, Dr. Jonathan Greenberg. Dr. Greenberg has served as the district superintendent for the Perris Union High School District since 2007. The PUHSD includes Paloma Valley and Heritage High Schools, two schools who have served Menifee students very well during Dr. Greenberg’s tenure as superintendent.
Dr. Greenberg officially retires on Aug. 31, a couple of short weeks from now. Under his tutelage, the PUHSD has improved student achievement by a large margin. This has been accomplished while improving the safety and environment of the students.
The process toward the unification of Menifee schools has made progress under Dr. Greenberg’s tenure. The land has been purchased, architectural plans have been drawn, and other preliminary work has been completed. Measure T of 2012 has set aside some $76 million toward the building of the high school on Scott Road. Only the economic downturn has delayed the long-awaited new school.
Jonathan Greenberg asked me to co-chair the campaign for Measure T in 2012. The measure passed with some 61 percent of the vote, demonstrating the trust that the voters in our community have placed in the leaders of PUHSD to continue the work to build and open High School Number 4. I have no doubt that this school will be completed and will serve Menifee students in the same fashion that Paloma Valley and Heritage have done these past years.
Dr. Greenberg will be handing the PUHSD reins to Grant Bennett, a longtime administrator in the PUHSD. Grant will perform his responsibilities in an excellent fashion but he still has some rather big shoes to fill.
I wish you well, Dr. Greenberg. Enjoy your retirement. You deserve it.
Randy Freeman and his family have lived in Menifee since 1993. Randy teaches kindergarten in Perris and his lovely wife Karen teaches first grade here in Menifee at Freedom Crest Elementary School. They are the proud parents of four beautiful daughters: Daniela, Sarah, Holly, and Megan. Other family members include dogs Scruffy and Max, and turtle Tuttles. Randy earned his PhD in early childhood education in 2011 and has served on the Menifee Union School Board since 2008. When not assisting Karen in driving the girls to all of their sporting events, Randy volunteers at the Boys & Girls Club of Menifee Valley.

ALDI Store Opens to Large Crowds in Menifee
Customers shopped for fresh produce as well as all kinds of discount items at the ALDI store opening in Menifee today. Menifee 24/7 photos: Doug Spoon |
ALDI, a growing grocery store company known for its fresh and organic foods and discount prices, opened to large crowds today at Town Center Marketplace in Menifee.
Customers were lined up well into the parking lot at the 9 a.m. opening time. By early afternoon, the store was still packed with shoppers looking for fresh produce, meat, various grocery items and deals in ALDI's popular "ALDI Finds" section in the middle of the store.
Jim Taylor, director of store operations, called the ALDI Finds section a sort of "treasure hunt," where popular brand items are on display in the center aisles and rotated as new specials come in. He said ALDI also offers a double guarantee on items, in which customers not satisfied can return for a replacement item and a refund.
"Smart shoppers have been able to count on us for quality products," Taylor said about ALDI, which has been in business since 1976 and advertises savings of up to 50 percent on items. "We're excited by the quality of products we have, and we're real excited to be in this area."
The Menifee store is located at 30163 Haun Road in the new Town Center Marketplace. Hours are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily.
