Randall Lewis (second from left) with Menifee Action Group memebers, Darcy Kuenzi, Bill Zimmerman and Jim Wang.
"Quality should be the buzzword that guides Menifee during this crucial time in its development."

That was the message given by urban planning authority Randall Lewis to more than 40 civic and business leaders on Aug. 16 at a luncheon hosted by the Menifee Action Group at Menifee Lakes Country Club.

“The decisions made during the next three years will affect Menifee for the next 30,” said Lewis, executive vice president of the Upland-based Lewis Group of Companies, which has built successful shopping centers, master-planned communities, office and industrial projects.

With large tracts of undeveloped land, Menifee holds enormous potential for becoming a vibrant city, Lewis said, but it must be willing to appeal to a wide range of people in various stages of their lives.

"You shouldn't fear multi-family community plans, but you must insist that they be quality projects,” Lewis said. "There is already an increasing demand for smaller product types that are affordable with lower energy and maintenance costs appealing to empty nesters, first-time buyers and young executives."

“And don’t forget to allow for housing for CEOs who will consider relocating his or her company to a place where the CEO’s family might want to live,” Lewis added. A strong arts community, bustling downtown and healthy lifestyles are just some of the important components to ensuring a successful city, Lewis said.

Mayor Scott Mann, City Council members Tom Fuhrman and John Denver, and planning commissioners Matt Liesemeyer and Earl Phillips were in the audience as Lewis advised the city that it should expect to see a varied retail environment where today’s big-box retailers trend to smaller spaces and the demand for smaller housing product are increasing.

"Menifee should build on what is has already," Lewis said. "Don't try and be something you're not. Make an honest assessment and take advantage of the assets already here like the community college, the hospital and the I-215 freeway."

The lunchtime event was organized by the Menifee Action Group, comprised of business and community leaders who are active in promoting economic success and good governance to the young city of Menifee.

Once Again, It's Soap Box Derby Time in Menifee!

A year ago, when Menifee city officials went to him seeking ideas about a fun community event that would attract participants and visitors, Joe Schnake wasn't sure what to expect.

As it turned out, his idea -- a soap box derby -- had people lining Menifee Road, cheering on 20 drivers who coasted down the hill from Craig Avenue to the finish line at Legacy Way, just south of Holland Road.

Schnake, recreation supervisor for Valley-Wide Recreation, had hit upon success. Ever watched those "Little Rascals" films where the kids race downhill in homemade race cars? That's what you'll see once again this Saturday, Sept. 7, in the second annual Menifee Soap Box Derby, sponsored by the City of Menifee.

Word of last year's fun-filled event spread, and this year more than double the number of cars are entered -- 45, to be exact. Using race cars they have made themselves according to strict specifications, drivers will compete in various age groups for trophies and good old-fashioned fun.

"Our entry list filled up 2 1/2 months ago," said Schnake, who runs the event. "After last year, this thing just exploded. We had 38 racers registered for this race by April. The first one signed up in February."

This year's field includes entries from not only Menifee, but Lake Elsinore, Hemet and Beaumont. A family from Ohio has already expressed interest in entering next year's race after a grandfather witnessed the 2012 fun and games.

"I foresee it getting bigger from this point on," Schnake said. "What we do that's different from a lot of soap box derbies is we allow you to build your own car from the ground up."

Drivers range in age from 6-60, and you'll see a wide variety of car designs. Check-in for drivers is at 7 a.m., with opening ceremonies -- including a color guard and singing of the national anthem -- at 7:30. There will be vendor booths with refreshments and a small downhill side course for kids to practice on.

Menifee Road will be closed to traffic from Craig Avenue to Holland Road beginning at 6 a.m. Saturday.

A Wildomar woman was arrested on suspicion of bank robbery in Temecula following a car chase and crash, police said today.

According to the Temecula Police Department, officers responded to the report of a robbery at the U.S. Bank in the 29500 block of Ynez Road at 5:46 p.m. Tuesday. Police said a white female wearing sunglasses and a wig approached the teller and presented a note demanding money.
